Sweden Creek Falls Natural Area - Ozark Wilderness

Updated: Nov 22, 2022

After camping near the Kings River Falls area, the next morning I decided to drive along the country roads through the wilderness to my next destination - Sweden Creek Falls. It was a beautiful misty morning. I had to drive very slow as the roads were unpaved. Around halfway I was greeted by a few curious calves. Their innocence was shining through their beautiful eyes. I stopped the engine so as not to scare them and greeted them all - magic lives within the wild. The enticing beauty of the Boxley Valley was right in front of me.

There was no cell phone reception so I was thankful for the Gaia maps that I had downloaded. I continued my journey and reached the parking area from where the trail starts towards Sweden Creek. It was about 7:00 am and I was the only one in the parking area. I slowly started going down the trail that was very clearly defined. Slowly I could hear the sound of water from a distance. Soon I reached the top of a bluff area where there was a small cascading waterfall.

I decided to follow the path that leads to the left along the top of the bluff (solid red line on the map below). There were beautiful wildflowers everywhere! I always appreciate them.... as they are strong enough to rise again after being trampled on and able to flourish in the most broken of places.

I could see the 80 foot tall thundering waterfalls in front of me - truly nature's ensemble. I had to be very careful standing on the side of the tall bluff as it is very easy to lose awareness of my surroundings while focusing on photography. A small mistake can change one's life forever.

I decided to get back to the small cascading waterfall area and climb down to the bottom of the bluff (dotted red line on the map). As I reached the bottom, the bluff curved back to the left, forming the eastern wall of the canyon. Soon I reached the bottom of the falls. Again, I was all alone! I painfully recognized that I forgot my towel in the truck and decided not to jump into the water.

After spending some time enjoying this oasis of serenity, I hiked back to the parking lot to drive to the next destination - The Glory Hole.
