A Beautiful Sunset at Waon Beach, Suncheon, South Korea

Sunsets are always fascinating to watch. It is a moment when the star of the stars gives way for thousands of other stars to shine! Right from childhood I used to love watching the sunset at Fort Cochin beach, Kerala, India, not so far from my home by boat. One day my Korean language teacher suggested to go and see the sunset from Waon beach, located about 1-1/2 hours from Goeje where I lived. On a Saturday afternoon, 9th of November 2019, I decided to check it out and headed towards the beach. It was a beautiful day and I was eager as to how beautiful the location would be.

As the road approached the destination I was thrilled by seeing the beauty of the wetlands with mountains at a distance. It was far beyond my expectations as I never heard about this beach before despite reading so much about this beautiful country...Korea.

I drove to the far end of the beach and parked my car. There were not many people on the beach. It was calm and serene and I decided to take a stroll enjoying the warmth of the nature. This part of the peninsula is famous for the beautiful wet lands eco system.

Soon the sun started descending towards the horizon painting the sky with brilliant orb of amber and tangerine. The beach became more crowded. The gentle breeze created small waves that buffeted the fishing boats. I walked on a pier towards the Sun to get closer without realizing the 93 million miles (150 million kilometers) between us. Witnessing the beauty and awe of the sunset can bring people to the present moment - an encounter with something so strikingly vast. Mahatma Gandhi once said "When I admire the wonders of a sunset or the beauty of the moon, my soul expands in the worship of the Creator."

The nature got ready for the protective blanket of darkness and new dreams......I started my journey back home through the winding coastal roads. I still vividly remember that sunset: it was really a beautiful moment! I take this opportunity to thank Eugean Hong for recommending to visit Waon beach to watch one of the best sunsets I have ever seen to this day.
